Driving test swap: what it is, and how one actually happens
A driving test swap is two learners exchanging the tests they have already booked. DVSA makes the exchange over the phone, it costs nothing, and it is the only way to reach a date that is already sitting inside somebody else's booking. Since 12 May 2026 it is also something only you can arrange, for yourself.
Everything here follows DVSA's published guidance on swapping your driving test with another learner driver. The booking rules changed three times between March and June 2026, so read the official page before you ring.
A swap is not the same as changing your test
Three different things get called moving a test, and they lead to three different places.
| What you do | What you can reach | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Change your test on GOV.UK | Only slots nobody has booked | Free with ten working days' notice, and it spends one of your two changes |
| Cancel and rebook | The back of the queue | The fee, unless you gave ten working days' notice |
| Swap with another learner | A booked slot, held by somebody who wants to move | Free, and it spends one of your two changes |
The distinction matters most exactly when you need it most. A long wait means the free pool is empty, so every date within reach of you is in somebody's hands. A swap is the door into that pool, and it is a door DVSA opens deliberately.
Why anybody would hand over their date
Because dates go wrong in both directions. One learner takes the first thing offered and finds it lands the week they are away. Another books for August, is ready by June, and now has to sit and wait for a test they could pass tomorrow. Neither is short of a test. They are holding the wrong one, and each is what the other needs.
That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the date you cannot use is worth as much on a board as the date you want. Waiting for a cancellation is the same problem approached from the slower side.
Only you can arrange it
Since 12 May 2026 the only person allowed to book, change, swap or cancel a driving test is the candidate whose test it is. Not an instructor, not a driving school, not an agency, and not an app holding your licence number.
That is a real constraint on what any swap service can be, this one included. A site can put two learners in the same place and check that a swap between them would be legal. It cannot go near either booking. Anything still offering to book, hold or manage your test is offering something learners are no longer permitted to use, and it is your booking at risk rather than theirs. What happened to the cancellation apps traces where that industry went.
What has to be true before DVSA will do it
Four conditions, and all four have to hold.
You both have a change left
A car test can be changed twice. A swap spends one of the two, so you each need at least one in hand.
Ten working days' notice
Counted to whichever of the two tests comes first, which may well not be yours. Monday to Saturday count as working days; Sundays and public holidays do not.
The centres are close enough
The same centre as yours, one of your three nearest, or a centre you first booked at. It has to be true from both sides, which is what stops a London test pairing with a Manchester one.
The test types match
Weekday with weekday. Evening, weekend and bank holiday tests sit in a higher price tier and pair only with each other.
The ten day rule is the one that catches most people, because it is the only one that gets worse while you think about it. The four conditions in full sets out what DVSA does when one of them fails, and what you must never hand over to another learner.
Finding the other learner is the hard part
Everything above takes an afternoon. The slow part is the coincidence: somebody within reach of your centre, holding a date you would take, who wants the date you are holding. Straight mirrors are rarer than loops, where three learners each hand on the date the next one wanted.
That is the part this site is for. Say which slot you hold and which dates you would rather have, and anything that fails one of the four conditions is filtered out before it reaches you. See who is listed at your centre, or start from the centre itself: every driving test centre in Great Britain has a page showing what is on the board there, the pass rate, and how long people are waiting.
The call, briefly
Swaps are made by phone and nowhere else. One of you rings DVSA on 0300 200 1122, option 1, weekdays 8am to 5pm. They check the caller, ring the other learner on the number registered to that booking, check them too, take both consents, and the bookings change hands. About ten minutes.
You do not have to be in the same room, but you both have to be reachable while it is happening. You keep your original booking reference and your original payment, and no confirmation email arrives: the next reminder DVSA sends carries the new date. The full call script lists what to have in front of you before you dial.
What it costs
Nothing, to anyone. DVSA does not charge for a swap, the match here is free, and no money should pass between the two learners. A slot with a price attached is a resale, and it came out of the same free pool you can see yourself.
The ways a swap dies
Leaving it late. Inside ten working days of the earlier test there is nothing to be done, and that clock runs against the pair of you rather than just you.
A centre that does not qualify. Enthusiasm has no bearing on it. If the centres do not pair in both directions the call ends there.
A mismatched type. A Saturday test and a Tuesday test cannot be exchanged however much both learners want it.
A wrong digit. You read the other learner's booking reference out during the call, and one wrong character is the most common reason a swap stalls.
Nobody answering. DVSA rings the other learner mid-call, from a number they will not recognise. Agree a time when you are both free and both looking at your phones.
None of these costs you a change. A change is only spent when a swap completes, so a swap that falls apart on the call leaves both bookings as they were.
If nobody wants your date yet
A board is thin before it is thick, and a centre with nothing on it today is not a centre with nothing on it in a fortnight. Leave a watch on your centre and you hear the moment a slot appears there; it costs nothing and one click stops it. While you wait, how long every centre in the country is waiting is worth reading before you assume yours is the bad one, and every centre ranked by pass rate puts the other half of the picture next to it.
Questions people ask
Can I swap my driving test with another learner?
Yes. DVSA will exchange two learners' bookings over the phone, free of charge, as long as you both have a change left, the earlier of the two tests is more than ten working days away, the centres qualify and the test types match. You arrange the match yourselves; DVSA makes the change.
Is swapping a driving test against the rules?
No. Swapping is set out in DVSA's own guidance. What is no longer allowed, since 12 May 2026, is anybody else booking, changing or managing your test for you, which is why you have to make the call yourself.
Does a driving test swap cost anything?
No. DVSA does not charge for a swap, you keep your original payment and booking reference, and no money should pass between the two learners. Anyone charging for a slot is reselling something that came out of the free pool.
How long does a swap take?
The call takes about ten minutes and both learners have to be reachable while it happens. Finding somebody whose problem is the mirror image of yours is the part that takes time.
Can I swap to a different test centre?
Only to the same centre as yours, one of your three nearest, or a centre you first booked at, and the same has to be true from the other learner's side. A swap across a city is often fine. A swap across the country is not.
What happens if the other learner pulls out?
Nothing changes for either of you. A change is only spent when a swap completes, so a swap that fails a security check or is declined on the call leaves both bookings exactly as they were.
Waiting for a date you did not choose?
Somebody out there wants yours. List your test free, and we email you the moment a learner who fits appears. DVSA does the actual swap on the phone.
